Fruity, Fresh & Fun: Healthy, Superfood Cocktails

There’s nothing we love more than a good cocktail - catching up with friends, relaxing after a hard week, pre-dinner, post-brunch, on a sunny day - there’s not many situations that can’t be improved by a cocktail or two. We’re all about ‘everything in moderation’ as well, but the sugar content of your average pina colada or margarita is nothing short of scary - a few of those will definitely outweigh that gruelling barre Pilates class the night before.

It’s not all bad though, ‘healthy cocktails’ seem to be the newest trend to hit the UK, with many places popping up offering healthier alternatives such as Tanya’s Cafe and Redemption Bar in London and Treacle bar in Edinburgh. Another fun, and much cheaper, way is to make your own at home as well! We’re not just talking a shot of vodka in your green juice (although I’m sure that would be great too), with a few tweaks and fresh ingredients, you can be whipping up your own healthy versions of the classics in no time! The main focus is not on avoiding the alcohol, but more the sugar-laden mixers and syrups - all which can be done easily through using freshly squeezed fruit juices, herbs, natural sweeteners and heck whilst you're at it, you may as well throw in a superfood or two for the added health boost! 

To get you started, we’ve come up with a super easy, no fuss recipes for you to try, so brush off that cocktail shaker, invite your friends round and give it a go - it’s healthy after all!


WATERMELON AND ACAI MARTINI

INGREDIENTS

- 1/2 watermelon
- 1 tbsp frozen acai powder
- a handful fresh mint
- 1 lime
- 75ml vodka
- ice

METHOD

1. Cut the watermelon up into chunks and add to a blender along with the ace powder, mint and juice from the lime
2. Blend until smooth
3. Add the vodka and watermelon mixture to a cocktail shaker and fill with ice
4. Shake for 1-2mins until completely combined
5. Strain the cocktail into martini glasses and decorate with a thin sliver of lime
