We're Four Years Old!
This week, we turned 4 years old. Four years since we delivered the first ever Pollen + Grace lunch box, and four years since we started spreading the word of honest, healthy food. Since we started out, the industry has been through the ‘clean eating’ phase, seen a monumental rise in the popularity of veganism - McDonalds have developed a vegan burger and Gregg’s released a vegan sausage roll, and whilst we have no desire to eat either of these, it’s a pretty monumental step towards making meat free life the norm.
We’ve also seen a huge uptake in gluten free food, and then a whole load of backlash around gluten free being used as a means of losing weight. Getting oat milk in your coffee is now the norm rather than a few and far between luxury, and going out for pizza is possible even if you’re a gluten free vegan. Basically, the landscape of food, and living with intolerances has changed significantly.
And throughout it all, we’re happy to have been consistent with our brand values, product and mission. Our food is, and has remained free from gluten, wheat, dairy and refined sugars (although we don’t really make that last claim on our packaging anymore as it’s a little controversial with EU guidelines). Our food is still made by hand, still nutritionally designed based on the same principles and still a large, plentiful portion in the same way that it was on day one.
In fact, the only differences are that we now make 1,000 products a day rather than 10 or so, and we have a team of 12 chefs and packers in a pretty large production facility rather than our co founder and her mum doing it all from home. We also have a qualified naturopath who works with us to ensure our product actually delivers on the nutrition front, and that every ingredient compliments the others both in taste and nutritional breakdown. For instance, in our daal pot, the lentils are paired with asafoetida as lentils are known to be a little bit of an irritant on the gut, whereas asafoetida is used to calm things down. Not only are they both common in Ayurvedic recipes, which is what our daal pot was inspired by, but they work together to lessen any unwanted side effects.
And we promise to continue aligning to these values as we move forward. With 2019 being the year that we hit mainstream supermarkets, a few people have already questioned whether we will choose to ‘cut corners’ like so many food companies do. We can wholeheartedly say that we never will - our whole brand is built on bringing real, honest food to the masses, so deciding to add questionable ingredients in a bid to extend shelf life, or use poor quality ingredients to cut prices would completely go against our intentions. We totally understand why brands do such things - when you look at the price of generic coconut oil vs. raw extra virgin coconut oil or high grade maple syrup vs. other syrups/low grade maple, it could be tempting to cut corners, but then we wouldn’t feel happy promoting (or eating for that matter) our products, so what would be the point in that?
So here’s to the past 4 years and the next however many years moving forward; always high quality, always made with a whole lot of love and care, and always a product made with your health and wellness at the forefront.
